Can you machine wash a down mattress topper (in washing machine) and then dry, as you would other bedding?

yes you can wash a down mattress in the washer. put it on the hand wash cycle and if you do not have that cycle put it on the delicate or gentle wash with cold water. i wash them on a regular basis and have not hurt one yet.
Do not put in a washer with an agitator! Go to the laundry mat and wash in one of the big washers on the gentle cycle. When drying, add three tennis balls. May take up to three hours to dry completely, don’t forget to take out and fluff every 20-30 minutes though!

You should be able to. Look at the washing instructions on the topper.
